Heavy Moss Removal &
Full Biocide Treatment
on a Semi-Detached Property
in Beaconsfield

A Beaconsfield homeowner had been watching the moss on their roof thicken for a couple of years without doing anything about it. By the time they got in touch, both slopes were carrying significant moss growth across the full surface. One clean and biocide treatment later, the roof looked brand new.

Project Overview

This project was a straightforward residential moss removal and biocide treatment job on a semi-detached property in Beaconsfield. The property sits in a typical HP9 residential road with established gardens and reasonable tree coverage nearby — the kind of environment where moss on a concrete tile roof is not just common but almost inevitable without regular professional treatment.

The job itself was uncomplicated, which is worth saying directly: no structural surprises, no access difficulties, no tile damage. A well-built property with a sound roof that had simply been allowed to accumulate a couple of seasons of moss growth without attention. One day on site and it was done.

We include this project in our case studies not because it was unusual, but because it is representative. The majority of the roof cleaning work we do across Beaconsfield and the surrounding HP9 postcode looks exactly like this: solid family homes, concrete interlocking tiles, varying degrees of moss growth, and owners who have been meaning to sort it for a while and finally got round to it. If your roof looks like the before photographs on this page, the solution is the same.

The Problem

The homeowner had noticed the moss building up on the rear slope first — the north-facing side, which gets less direct sun and takes longer to dry out after rain. By the time they contacted us, both slopes had visible moss coverage, with the rear elevation significantly heavier than the front. The ridge line had a dense band of growth along its full length, and the lower courses of tiles near the gutters were particularly thick.

They had not had the roof professionally cleaned before and were not sure how to approach it. The prompt to get in touch was partly that the gutters had started filling more rapidly with green debris after rainfall — a reliable sign that moss has reached the lower edge of the tile and is beginning to break off into the drainage. They searched online, read through our Google reviews and called us directly.

This pattern is very common across Beaconsfield. The HP9 and HP10 postcodes have enough established planting and garden tree coverage to shade roof sections for a meaningful part of the day, and the Chiltern Hills area receives consistent annual rainfall. Concrete interlocking tiles, while more resilient than clay or slate, are far from immune to moss accumulation in these conditions — particularly on north-facing aspects where drying time after rainfall is significantly extended.

Survey Findings

We visited the property to carry out a full survey before providing a written quote. On properties like this — a standard semi-detached with a straightforward two-pitch roof, no dormers, one chimney stack — ground-level assessment gives a reliable picture of what we are dealing with.

The survey confirmed what the homeowner had described. Moss growth was heavy on both slopes, with the north-facing rear elevation carrying the denser accumulation. The growth was well-established, suggesting at minimum two to three seasons of development without treatment. The ridge and hip mortar was in good condition, and there were no signs of tile cracking, displacement or water ingress. A sound roof doing what roofs do in this part of the country when they go unattended.

Survey findings

  • Heavy moss accumulation across both slopes, heavier on the north-facing rear elevation
  • Dense moss growth along the full ridge line and at the lower tile courses above the gutters
  • Gutters carrying elevated organic debris consistent with moss reaching the tile edge
  • Ridge cap mortar sound — no cracking, shrinkage or displacement identified
  • All tiles intact, no evidence of cracking, lifting or displacement
  • No evidence of water ingress or felt damage
  • Straightforward access — standard semi-detached profile, no access constraints

Our recommendation

Full manual moss removal using the carbon pole system, a low-pressure rinse to clear fine debris and prepare the tile surface, followed by professional DDAC biocide treatment across both slopes, ridge and hip sections. The roof was in sound structural condition, which meant we could get straight to the clean without any preliminary repair work being needed. We provided a fixed written quote on the same day as the survey.

The Cleaning Process

Work was carried out in a single day. Equipment was set up on the front elevation first, working through to the rear. The homeowner was present for the start of the day but left us to get on with it, which is how most of our jobs run.

01

Site setup

Equipment positioned on the front elevation to start. Garden areas beneath the treatment zones were checked for anything that needed moving before work began. No specific preparation was needed on this property — the site was accessible and unobstructed.

02

Manual moss removal — front slope

Starting at the ridge and working systematically down to the eave, moss was lifted and removed from every tile face using our carbon fibre extension pole fitted with soft-bristle heads. The front slope carried moderate growth compared to the rear, but the ridge line required thorough attention along its full length. All cleared material was directed clear of the gutters.

No high-pressure water at this stage. Mechanical removal only.

03

Manual moss removal — rear slope

The rear elevation required more time. The north-facing aspect had allowed a denser, more established accumulation to develop, with the lower third of the slope carrying the heaviest growth. We worked methodically from ridge to eave, giving the lower courses and the area directly above the gutters particular attention. Everything cleared without issue — the concrete tile surface was in good condition throughout and responded well to mechanical removal.

04

Low-pressure rinse

Following removal, both slopes were rinsed at controlled low pressure to clear fine residue from the tile surface before biocide application. Concrete interlocking tiles are tolerant of a careful rinse; the goal at this stage was surface preparation rather than additional cleaning.

05

Professional DDAC biocide treatment

With the surface cleared and prepared, professional-grade DDAC biocide was applied to the full treated area using a calibrated pump sprayer — both slopes in full, including the ridge, hip sections and the lower courses above the gutters where regrowth tends to establish most rapidly. Full even coverage was achieved across both elevations. Product details were recorded in the written treatment record issued to the homeowner on completion.

COSHH data sheet provided. Written treatment record issued same day.

06

Completion and documentation

All cleared organic material was removed from the property. Before and after photography was taken of both elevations. The homeowner received the treatment record, COSHH data sheet and aftercare guide on the same day. The whole job — from setting up equipment to final site clearance — was completed in a single working day.

Results

The transformation was marked. Concrete interlocking tiles respond well to this method because their surface, once cleared of organic growth, comes back cleanly — the tile profile is sharp and the colour is consistent. The homeowner’s words when they saw it were that it looked brand new, which is the result we aim for on every job.

More importantly: the result that matters is not just what it looked like on the day of the clean, but what it looks like in three years’ time. The biocide treatment applied to this roof will inhibit new moss and algae establishment significantly over that period. In the meantime, the homeowner has a clean roof, a written treatment record, and the knowledge that if anything unexpected develops within twelve months, we will return to assess it at no charge.

Results on completion

  • All moss growth removed from both slopes, ridge and hip sections
  • Tile surfaces restored to full clean condition — described by the homeowner as looking brand new
  • Gutters cleared of the organic debris that had been accumulating at the tile edge
  • Professional DDAC biocide applied across the full treated area — inhibiting regrowth for an estimated 3–4 years
  • No structural issues identified or created — roof left in sound, clean condition
  • Before and after photography, written treatment record, COSHH data sheet and aftercare guide provided same day

Why This Homeowner Chose Glanville

The homeowner found us through a Google search and read through our reviews before making contact. They did not call around for multiple quotes — the reviews gave them enough confidence to get in touch directly. That is a pattern we see regularly, and it is why we take the quality and consistency of our Google presence seriously.

Found through Google search

Searched for roof cleaning in Beaconsfield and found Glanville through organic search results. Read through the reviews before calling — a common path for our residential enquiries in the HP9 area.

Reassured by the reviews

The detail and consistency across our Google reviews gave the homeowner confidence before they called. The reviews describe real jobs in recognisable terms — which is what matters to someone choosing a contractor for the first time.

Clear, straightforward communication

We visited, surveyed the roof, explained what we found and what we recommended, and provided a written fixed-price quote. No pressure to proceed, no vague estimates. That straightforwardness is what the homeowner described when we asked what had made them comfortable booking.

Biocide treatment included as standard

The homeowner specifically asked whether biocide treatment was included or charged as an extra. When we confirmed it was part of the standard service, that removed a concern they had had with another company they had briefly considered.

Roof Cleaning in Beaconsfield & Surrounding Areas

This project was one of a number we have completed across the Beaconsfield and HP9 area. Old Town Beaconsfield, the surrounding residential roads and the nearby villages of Seer Green, Jordans and Gerrards Cross all share the same property profile and the same tendency toward roof moss growth that makes professional cleaning and biocide treatment a sensible recurring investment.

Gerrards Cross

SL9 properties regularly come to us via referrals from Beaconsfield clients. Large detached homes in wooded plots facing similar moss accumulation patterns.
